The Correspondent is looking for a front-end developer

The Correspondent is the world’s most successful ad-free, collaborative, and member-funded journalism platform. Founded in the Netherlands as De Correspondent in 2013, it is now expanding to the English language as The Correspondent following a world record-breaking crowdfunding campaign in November 2018 which raised over $2.5 million from more than 45,000 founding members. Its mission is to provide its members with unbreaking news, helping them understand the underlying forces that shape our world. The Correspondent will officially launch by September 30th 2019.

And we need you to make that happen!

We are looking for a front-end developer to help us develop both our Dutch- and English-language platforms and our CMS, Include. This job is full time (40 hours per week). You’ll be based in our Amsterdam office, in the Netherlands. Our office is bilingual, communicating both in English and in Dutch.

  • Together with our developers you will work to build and enhance our Dutch and English platforms.
  • We’re continuously improving on our own CMS, Include. You’ll help us build features for our article editor, our contribution section, and our statistics dashboards.
  • We’re continuously looking for new ways to present our journalistic productions, ranging from cool infographic features to transformative ways of collaborating with knowledgeable members.
  • Our development team is unlike any other. As a front-end developer you’ll work closely with our writers, image editors, designers, social media team, and design agency Momkai (one of our founding partners).
  • Our culture is one of invitation rather than command. You’re expected to plan out your milestones and deliverables, but your work is characterized by flexibility and rapid changes as well. We are always open to new ways of looking at things–and we expect you to be too.
  • At The Correspondent we’ve always got an eye on the future, and we’re always working to improve what we do by inventing new ways to present journalistic content.

Our office provides a welcoming mix of warmth, humor, and creative chaos. You’ll get both the freedom and the guidance to grow. We’re interested in learning how you see the world. We highly value diversity in both cultural background and worldview – and actively seek to diversify our staff with every hire.

At The Correspondent, you’ll be part of an editorial team that is hugely passionate about the future of journalism. You’ll be working for an organization that continually challenges itself to be a more sustainable, diverse, vibrant, and rewarding place to work as well.

What we’re looking for:

  • Front-end fluency — You have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of web development and you’re fluent in HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript.
  • Clean code — You write readable, maintainable, and well-structured code.
  • Deploy early, deploy often — You’re skilled at first developing the minimal, most reliable implementation, then iteratively improving it further.
  • Proactive — You actively participate in delivering a quality product.
  • Code reviews — You’re always open to discussing your choices, receiving feedback, learning from your colleagues and teaching them what you know. At the same time, you’re happy to provide feedback to them and teach your colleagues what you know.
  • Keep improving — You’re eager to keep learning about new or alternative techniques.
  • Pride in a job done well — You don’t want to just put in your hours and tick off to-dos; you want your work to have a tangible, positive impact.

What we offer:

  • An ambitious and motivated team — about 50 colleagues in an inspiring environment, with new people joining because of the English expansion.
  • Room to grow — support in developing your career and yourself
  • A pleasant work space — a laptop, a second monitor, and a comfortable desk
  • A full-time job — a team to bounce ideas off all week long
  • An office in downtown Amsterdam — with a beautiful waterfront terrace
  • Close to Amsterdam Central Station — and private parking spaces at the office
  • Varied tasks — no two days are the same
  • A competitive salary
